HERMANN LOENS, 1866 – 1914, is well known in germany for his novels and poems about the people and nature of northern germany. in the mid sixties WILHELM M.BUSCH illustrated a collection of his nature and hunting novels AUF HEIMLICHER PIRSCH. below a selection of the beautiful pen and ink illustrations.

Great. So suggestive, which is something we are sorely lacking in this age of over-rendering.
I love how the heavy blacks balance and fill-out the finer lines.
They look even more powerful when you isolate them, their looseness & vignette composition are gorgeous. I still prefer when he add values with washes, Like Madame Bovary or Casanova series he did.
I wish i could draw as forcefully and purposefully as he does….
